Staten Island D.A. McMahon, NYPD to host gun buyback event Saturday

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — This Saturday, November 23, Staten Island District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, in collaboration with the NYPD, will hold a gun buyback event.

Mt. Sinai United Christian Church, located at 15 Pike St. in Tompkinsville, will host the event, which is a component of the New York City Gun Buyback Program, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

McMahon wrote on X, previously Twitter, “We look forward to taking many more dangerous weapons out of play next weekend. One less illegal gun on our streets is a victory.”

Those who surrender assault firearms and functional handguns will not be questioned and will be given $500 bank cards.

Additionally, the scheme provides a $200 bank card for 3-D produced and so-called ghost firearms.

A $75 bank card will be given to everyone who turns in a rifle or shotgun, while a $25 bank card will be given to those who turn in air guns, non-operational handguns, and imitation pistols.

Each participant is limited to two ghost guns and a maximum of three guns.

With the most recent event capturing slightly over 80 illicit handguns, the initiative has assisted in removing approximately 700 illegal firearms from Staten Island streets since it began in 2016.

This year, there have been 14 shooting victims and 14 shooting-related occurrences on Staten Island, according to NYPD Compstat data.

A 16-year-old boy was shot many times in New Brighton on Thursday. He was taken to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton by emergency medical services in stable condition.
