NYPD: Burglar caught inside restaurant on Staten Island after crowbar break-in

New York’s Staten Island. Authorities claim that early Sunday morning, a 33-year-old man with a lengthy criminal past broke into a popular and well regarded restaurant in St. George.

Jeffrey Reader of Stapleton’s Tessa Court is charged with breaking and entering the Beso restaurant at 70 Bay St. on Sunday at around 1:40 a.m.

The criminal complaint claims that Reader broke a glass pane with a crowbar to gain entry to the eatery, which was closed.

According to authorities, he was taken into custody within the eatery.

The criminal complaint and the police did not provide information on what, if anything, was taken.

According to the complaint, video surveillance material was reviewed as part of the inquiry.

Police claim to have discovered a screwdriver, a burglary instrument, in the suspect’s jeans pocket.

In response to allegations of burglary, criminal mischief, possession of burglary tools, criminal trespass, and trespass, the reader entered a not guilty plea.

In lieu of $50,000/$25,000 in cash bail, the defendant—whose first name is also written Jeffrey in public records—is being detained at Rikers Island. According to public records, he is scheduled to return to St. George’s Criminal Court on November 22.

A request for comment was not immediately answered by the defendant’s lawyer.

Prior arrests

In New York City, the reader has been detained over ten times.

He was sentenced to four years and six months to nine years in jail for occurrences on Staten Island after being found guilty of third-degree illegal possession of a weapon and third-degree burglary. Public records show that in February 2023, he was granted a merit release on parole.

The gun plea was related to an unrelated parole visit on July 11, 2017, and the burglaries took place on the 300 block of Forest Avenue in West Brighton between 3 and 4 a.m. on January 4, 2019.

According to the prosecution’ court files, the defendant broke through the rear window of the Mar Mar restaurant and took over $9,000 in cash and electronic equipment.

According to court documents, Reader also broke into Liberty Tavern.

According to court documents, the defendant used a crowbar to pry at an ATM in front of the pub, breaking it.

According to court documents, the reader left behind telltale evidence when he fled when he heard police approaching.

According to court documents, police discovered some cash, a flashlight, a crowbar, and clothing items.

According to court documents, authorities subsequently compared the garments to the defendant’s DNA.

Reader was charged with grand larceny, burglary, and possession of burglar’s tools.

In order to resolve all of the allegations against him in the restaurant incident, Reader entered a guilty plea to one count of third-degree burglary before the state Supreme Court in St. George. He was serving a 30-month to five-year term for gun possession when he received the two-to-four-year sentence.

The reason for such conviction is that on July 11, 2017, Reader was arrested inside the defendant’s residence by his parole officer.

According to a criminal complaint, authorities discovered a Firearms International Corporation Regent revolver in one room that was.22 caliber and had four bullets in the cylinder.
