In Michigan, a 42-year-old mother has been taken into custody after reportedly strangling her daughter and biting her on the neck before hurling her headlong down a set of stairs.
According to court documents examined by Law&Crime, Jennifer Lynn Vargas was arrested earlier this month and charged with one count of assault with intent to murder and one count of first-degree child abuse. The maximum penalty for both offenses is life in prison.
According to a story from MLive, the incident happened inside Vargas’ Blair Township house on November 8, 2024, just before midnight. About 160 miles northwest of Lansing is Blair Township.
According to the complaint, Michigan State Police troopers arrived at the residence and spoke with Vargas and the victim, who were standing outside in the driveway. After then, investigators conducted separate interviews with the two people.
Police clarified that the victim is Vargas’ daughter, although they have not disclosed her name or age.
According to reports from the victim, Vargas assaulted her, repeatedly striking her, strangling her, and finally hurling her down a set of stairs.
Authorities indicated that the woman had a cut on her hand, which she said was caused by her and Vargas fighting over a knife, and at least one visible bite mark.
The victim reportedly said that Vargas strangled her, causing her to lose consciousness several times in addition to her obvious injuries.
While Vargas was being arrested, emergency medical personnel took the victim to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for treatment.
More information about the alleged attack was revealed in court documents that Travel City NBC affiliate WPBN was able to get.
Authorities were informed by the woman that Vargas had physically abused her for more than an hour. According to court filings, the woman claimed Vargas choked her throughout the assault, banged her head into the floor, and then threw her headfirst down the steps.
The victim said that she pretended to be unconscious after being flung down the steps. The victim claimed that Vargas fled to an adjacent bedroom and locked the door when Vargas turned away.
Vargas allegedly broke through the locked door, restrained the woman on the bed, and strangled her once more while she tried to flee the house through a window. Vargas allegedly informed the woman that she would be sacrificed while she was being strangled.
In lieu of a $250,000 bond, Vargas is presently being detained at the Grand Traverse County Jail. A judge mandated that she keep at least 500 yards from the victim and refrain from communicating with her.
Vargas is expected to show up for a preliminary hearing on December 2 at 11 a.m.
