Fort Lauderdale Achieves Perfect Score for LGBTQ+ Inclusiveness for Sixth Year Running

For the sixth year in a row, Fort Lauderdale has achieved a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index (MEI), demonstrating its commitment to the LGBTQ+ community. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s annual report card, the MEI, evaluates cities around the US on how inclusive their laws, policies, and LGBTQ+ services are.

The City of Fort Lauderdale said in a statement that the high score is a result of accomplishments in a number of areas, such as law enforcement, municipal services, and LGBTQ+ equality leadership. But the city’s work goes well beyond these sectors. “Our consistent score of 100 tells our story of progress as a community, particularly the impact of numerous City initiatives and efforts,” said Mayor Dean J. Trantalis, who expressed delight in Fort Lauderdale’s dedication. We’re determined to stay on that course.

By designating June 2021 as the City’s LGBTQ+ Pride Month, a historic move solidified the city’s dedication to the LGBTQ+ community. Fort Lauderdale has also taken proactive steps, such as creating a Human Rights Commission and designating a specific LGBTQ+ Liaison Officer within the Police Department. Alongside these efforts, there is a procedure in place for reporting hate crime statistics to the FBI, as well as outreach efforts to involve LGBTQ+ individuals in City services and programs.

Fort Lauderdale’s steady performance on the MEI sets an example for other communities hoping to receive comparable recognition and shows a persistent commitment to equality. The Human Rights Campaign’s website offers the complete MEI report as well as comprehensive scorecards for each city that received a rating. The City of Fort Lauderdale’s published scorecard, which is available on their official website, provides additional insight into the city’s success.
