Power Line Collapse Causes Vehicle Fire on Ferdinand Street in Coral Gables

Two cars were burned alive outside a house on Ferdinand Street in the Coral Gables neighborhood early this morning after a terrifying incident in which a power line accidentally fell on them. The fire department was called shortly before six in the morning, according to Local 10, and they rushed to the 1800 block where the cars were burning. The fallen power line started the fire, which threatened to spread to the neighboring house.

Lieutenant Ishmael Roig of Coral Gables Fire Rescue emphasized the seriousness of the situation, saying, “We had our battalion chief on duty realize the gravity of the situation, and as soon as he saw crews extending their hose lines to put water on it, he said, ‘Hold on a second.'” Firefighters swiftly turned off the FPL power grid as flames threatened the home’s edges, preventing additional damage. In a statement received by Local 10, he said, “Let’s go ahead and shut down the FPL power grid so we can fight that fire and save that house.”

After the fire was extinguished, aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed the two trucks reduced to charred remains, demonstrating the extent of the destruction. The origin of the tragedy, which left two automobiles demolished, was still being investigated, but according to NBC Miami, it looked like a mystery accident caused the power line to collapse right onto the cars. No injuries were recorded.

The fire department and FPL are currently conducting investigations to ascertain the series of events that led to the power line failure and ensuing fire. As the smoke cleared, the residents who had been inside the house during this incident were verified by the fire department to have arrived safely outside, preventing any harm.
