Texas Governor Abbott Orders State Entities to Withdraw Investments from China, Citing Security Concerns

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has maintained his tough stance against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) by ordering state agencies to start withdrawing their financial investments in China right away. Abbott’s letter to Texas state entities highlights the need of protecting Texans from potential financial and other threats from foreign foes. “Security of Texas and Texans is of utmost importance,” Governor Abbott wrote in a letter sent by the Office of the Texas Governor. He also mentioned that state-held investments in China had “increased instability and financial risk” as a result of CCP threats. The instruction made it plain that existing investments should be dissolved as soon as possible and that no new ones should be started.

The governor’s office said in a statement that the action is meant to shield Texans from the CCP’s systematic intimidation and coercion, as well as to safeguard financial assets. Abbott has recently taken steps to protect the state from possible security threats, such as issuing executive orders to fortify Texas against hostile foreign countries’ attempts to penetrate the state on a large scale.

Abbott’s efforts are not unique; last year, he joined three other Governors in urging Vanguard, an investing business, to provide developing market funds that explicitly avoid CCP risks. This coordinated effort demonstrated a strong opposition to investment entanglements with the CCP and underscored state authorities’ growing apprehension about China’s geopolitical tactics.

Additionally, the Houston-based Federal Bureau of Investigation has warned Texans, reaffirming Governor Abbott’s pledge to eliminate perceived threats. They have expressed concern that Chinese dissidents in Texas who openly criticize the CCP’s policies and practices may be singled out by the PRC and subjected to harassment. These events demonstrate a major attempt by state leadership to aggressively oppose and combat the influences of one of the major superpowers in the world on its own territory.
