The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office is collaborating with Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel to begin a state-level investigation into the November 30, 2021, Oxford High School shooting, following months of false starts and public calls for action. Oakland County’s chief assistant prosecutor, David Williams, affirmed that they are prepared to supply all the paperwork required to support the investigation. “The families’ call for an investigation is our first priority. According to The Detroit News, he said, “We will do whatever it takes and give the attorney general whatever is necessary so that can happen.”
This change follows the Oxford Community Schools board’s repeated rejection of AG Nessel’s requests for an investigation. Rather, the board decided to have Guidepost Solutions conduct an internal investigation.According to CBS News, their investigation highlighted inadequacies in ensuring a secure learning environment for students at all school district levels. Because the Guidepost investigation lacked the legal ability to force staff testimony, victims’ families have condemned it for leaving “crucial questions unanswered.”
Nessel said the absence of involvement from school officials hampered the district’s earlier probe. The Attorney General’s Office has underlined that local authorities must either suggest or invite the Attorney General to prosecute the case. Prosecutor Karen McDonald said, “We stand with the parents, and our office will do whatever it takes to ensure that that thorough investigation is completed,” according to WWJ Newsradio.
McDonald’s haste, in spite of the delay, underlines the seriousness of a mass disaster that destroyed lives while Nessel’s office struggles to obtain resources for the investigation. According to CBS News, Nessel’s spokesperson Kimberly Bush stated, “We are in discussions with the legislature and governor’s office to ensure the office has adequate resources for a comprehensive, timely review of the Oxford matter.” Ethan Crumbley, the gunman, received a life sentence without the possibility of release, and his parents were also convicted of involuntary manslaughter. However, the wider evaluation of the school’s accountability and policy shortcomings is still unresolved.
