New Orleans to Host Prestigious U.S. Gymnastics Championships After 30 Years, Aiming for Olympic Glory

For the first time in thirty years, New Orleans is preparing to host the U.S. Gymnastics Championships. According to a USA Gymnastics statement, the competition, which will include the best gymnastics talent in the country, will take place at the Smoothie King Center from August 7–11, 2025. This competition serves as a significant turning point for athletes who want to compete in the Olympics and is a precursor to the 2028 Los Angeles Games, which will bring the Summer Olympics back to the United States for the first time since 1996, according to NOLA.com.

The event will be crucial in deciding who will make the U.S. National Team for the 2025 World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia, in addition to showcasing junior and senior gymnasts competing for national crowns. According to FOX8Live, the city will host the USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show from August 8–10, drawing thousands of gymnasts, trainers, and business executives to the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center as part of the gymnastics craze.

New Orleans is a perfect fit for the championships because of its illustrious history of hosting top-tier events. “New Orleans does world-class events and sports better than anyone else,” said Li Li Leung, president and CEO of USA Gymnastics. “The city not only satisfies but surpasses our expectations,” Leung told FOX8Live. Citing the thrilling atmosphere of past SEC Championships in the arena, LSU gymnastics coach Jay Clark highlighted Louisiana’s passion for gymnastics.

The Smoothie King Center, a brand-new innovation at the time, was also established during the 1995 U.S. Gymnastics Championships, the final time the competition visited New Orleans. This comeback is a testament to the sport’s enduring dedication to the athletic community as well as its strong roots in the city. Leung alluded to the event’s strategic timing by saying, “We are excited to bring our championships and National Congress and Trade Show to New Orleans,” which serves as the first step for athletes aiming for the 2028 Games. Given its reputation as a venue for elite athletic events, New Orleans is ready to handle the massive build-up to the championship, according to NOLA.com.
