Winter Haven Heroes, Police Officers Rescue 6 from Early Morning Blaze, Red Cross Aids Displaced Residents

A fire that started early this morning has left six residents of Winter Haven without a place to live. According to WTSP, at approximately 5:30 a.m., a neighbor reported seeing flames at the rear of a house on 3rd Street NE across from their own.

Two Winter Haven police officers arrived in a matter of minutes, rushed into the flaming house, and began rescue operations. In their hurry, Winter Haven Fire crews, with the help of Polk County Fire Rescue teams, fought the fire, which was reportedly restricted to the back part of the house. According to FOX 13 News, the kitchen and laundry area sustained damage despite being restrained.

Thankfully, neither the police nor the fire department responders nor the six residents of the house were reported injured. The American Red Cross has stepped in to help the residents who have been displaced, giving them the support they need at this turbulent time.

The house fire caught the sleeping residents off guard, and they didn’t realize they were in danger until the cops came to their aid, according to WFLA. The rest of the home only sustained smoke damage since the fire was contained, preventing the flames from spreading to the front of the house.
