There are concerns about potential arson after a major fire on the South Shore destroyed a two-story construction garage and spread to nearby brush, according to Kingston Fire & Emergency Management. “Began receiving calls for a structure fire at 126 Wapping Rd” shortly after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to a statement posted on Kingston Fire & Emergency Management’s Twitter page. Firefighters had to deal with a wildfire that had gotten worse due to strong winds that spread embers across Wapping Road and started spot fires.
The fire needed a lot of resources to control, even with the Kingston Fire Department’s best efforts and help from nearby Plympton and Pembroke. A “working fire assignment and multiple brush breakers were requested” was part of the mutual aid. Additional resources from Carver and Plymouth were also called to the area, demonstrating the intensity of the fire. According to Kingston Fire & Emergency Management post, the personnel worked nonstop until after 8 a.m. when Kingston fire units were called in once again to put out a brush fire along Ring Road, approximately half a mile from the original spot, that had been burning for hours without anyone noticing.
Drone-assisted follow-up investigations confirmed there were no more fire outbreaks.According to Kingston incident & Emergency Management, the initial incident “is considered suspicious” and is presently being investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Kingston Fire Department, and Kingston Police Department. They conveyed their appreciation to their mutual aid partners for their invaluable assistance throughout the crisis. Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward as they continue to investigate the cause of the incident.
