Spencer Island Restoration Plans Progress with Public Workshop in Everett on December 5

As the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) gets ready to provide the public with an update this December, the restoration work on Spencer Island in Snohomish County is moving forward. According to a recent release, a major restoration project is under progress with the goal of revitalizing a portion of the river delta that underwent significant alterations due to agricultural growth in the early 20th century.

WDFW is hosting a public meeting with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and Snohomish County Parks to provide the most recent design concepts and talk about the recreational implications. The meeting is scheduled for December 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Weyerhaeuser Room on the fourth floor of the Everett Transit Station, which is situated at 3201 Smith Avenue in Everett. Members of the public can ask questions and offer suggestions regarding the restoration plans here. As the project is being developed, the initiative will improve the hydrological dynamics of the area, diversify local species, and strengthen salmon habitat.WDFW says.

Public input has been sought before, including in the next workshop. Preliminary design choices were first presented and feedback was gathered at a previous meeting and public comment period in 2023. In January 2025, there will likely be another opportunity for public comment, which will be an important part of the required National Environmental Policy Act review.

When papers from the December conference become accessible, residents of the Snohomish River estuary or anyone else interested in the ecological health of the area can access them on the WDFW website. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you can send an email with your questions to [email protected]. According to the agency, the restoration effort at Spencer Island is part of WDFW’s ongoing mission to conserve and improve fish, animals, and their ecosystems while guaranteeing the availability of sustainable recreational and economic opportunities.
