California Allocates Over $91 Million to Native American Tribes for Affordable Housing and Homelessness Programs

Native American tribes in California will get a sizable state-funded boost to promote the building of affordable housing and initiatives to combat homelessness as part of a major financial package. According to the California Department of Housing & Community Development, Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed the commitment to address the widespread problem of housing insecurity faced by Native communities throughout the state by announcing that more than $91 million is being directed to these communities through the Tribal Homekey program and the Tribal Housing Homeless Assistance and Prevention Program.

The programs, which are run by the California Housing and Community Development Department, have been specially designed in collaboration with tribes from throughout the state to address a persistent problem: the disproportionately high rates of homelessness and housing insecurity among Native Americans across the country. In a statement released by HCD Media, Governor Newsom stressed that “no community is untouched by housing challenges,” acknowledging the heightened difficulties faced by Native communities.

The approximately $71 million in the first-ever Tribal Homekey program disbursements will help build 172 units of affordable rental housing in rural areas including as Butte, Colusa, and Los Angeles, among others. This investment will be complemented by an extra $20 million from the Tribal Housing Homeless Assistance and Prevention Program, providing 37 federally recognized Tribes with a much-needed lifeline that is fully equipped to prevent and resolve homelessness in a culturally appropriate manner.
