Michigan Attorney General’s Office to Review Findings from State Police Investigation of Flint Teenager’s Fatal Shooting

The Michigan State Police have concluded their investigation into the November 2 shooting death of Rayvon Shahid, a teenager from Flint, who was shot and killed by an officer. The Detroit News said that an official statement from the Michigan Attorney General’s Office verified that the results, video footage, and other evidence were delivered to the office for examination this past Wednesday.

In a statement obtained by MSP Newsroom, Michigan State Police Director Col. James F. Grady II promised that such incidents are “immediately and thoroughly investigated” and that the present situation “is no exception.” Grady, who emphasized the seriousness of any fatalities during police encounters, revealed his previous meetings with Shahid’s mother and city community leaders, reaffirming the department’s dedication to a thorough and unbiased investigation into the incident that took place at around 6:30 p.m. on the intersection of Essex Street and Pasadena Avenue in Flint, where Shahid was shot after being confronted by police.

The troopers involved in Shahid’s shooting are still on administrative leave per protocol, amid increased statewide concern over police use of lethal force; their identities are being withheld in compliance with the union’s contract, which protects trooper names unless charges are brought. As Grady pointed out, this procedure complies with the contract provisions of the Michigan State Police Troopers Association.
