Slidell Man Sentenced to Six Months for Misappropriation of USPS Funds

Slidell resident Darren Phillip Coler, Jr., 35, pleaded guilty to embezzling money from the USPS and was given a six-month prison sentence. The United States Attorney’s Office said the penalty comes after an inquiry into the misappropriation of postal revenue.

Lance M. Africk, a U.S. District Judge, sentenced him to two years of supervised release on November 20 and mandated that he reimburse the entire sum. According to court documents, he was also obliged to pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee, as reported by the US Attorney’s Office.

Assistant United States Attorney Irene González of the General Crimes Unit prosecuted Darren Phillip Coler, Jr. The United States Postal Service Office of the Inspector General’s efforts in the inquiry were recognized by U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans. According to Evans’s office’s statement, “COLER, an employee of the United States Postal Service (USPS), beginning in July 2021 and continuing until November 2021, did knowingly and willfully use money and property, totaling $62,033, belonging to the USPS.” According to the US Attorney’s Office, Coler entered a guilty plea earlier this year after the inquiry, and his term is intended to discourage similar behavior.
