Oakland DA Pamela Price Charges Man with Trafficking of a Minor Amid City’s Ongoing Human Trafficking Crackdown

Deondre Smith-King, 29, has been charged by District Attorney Pamela Price with trafficking a minor for commercial sex. The allegations include two counts of pimping a kid and one case of human trafficking of a minor, both of which are felonies, according to an official statement from the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. After a police investigation linked Smith-King to these crimes from August 17 to November 12, he was taken into custody.

“Disrupting human trafficking, specifically in the City of Oakland, has been a major focus during my tenure in the district attorney’s office,” said DA Price, according to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. Given that Alameda County is the third-largest sex trafficking hub in the country, attention is brought to the seriousness of the matter. Adolescent African Americans make up 80% of the victims, and many of them are from foster homes. This information emphasizes how serious this illegal commerce is.

Smith-King was discovered with the kid who had been reported missing by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. Smith-King was arrested in an area known as “The Blade,” which is infamous for 24-hour sex trafficking operations. In order to “successfully tackle the problem,” DA Price urges ongoing efforts and collaboration with Bay Area law enforcement, according to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.

The accused appeared in court yesterday for a pre-trial hearing and is still being held at Dublin’s Santa Rita Jail on $355,000 bail. Smith-King may spend up to 12 years in state prison if found guilty of all charges.
