Several firearms, ammo, and a significant sum of money were seized during a routine car stop in Northeast Portland. Due to multiple traffic infractions, officers from the Portland Police Bureau’s Focused Intervention Team (FIT) stopped a car on November 20 near the junction of Northeast Halsey Street and Northeast 74th Avenue. When cops discovered a gun in a seat pocket, the altercation swiftly got out of hand, and all four passengers were taken into custody.
Officers were able to swiftly find two more guns during the ensuing search. According to a Portland Police Bureau statement, the cache contained three weapons in all, more than 80 rounds, and more than $3,000 in cash. This car had to unavoidably attract police attention before; about a month prior, the same car was the subject of another traffic stop during which two weapons were recovered.
Four people were taken into custody during the stop on Wednesday and sent to the Multnomah County Detention Center. Among the charges against the individuals are unlawful firearm possession and public possession of a loaded firearm. These include Rowan J. Swanson, 23, who was also detained on a probation officer detainer, Elijah Q. Martin and Lamar L. Stewart, all 19 years old, and Aerion L. Purifoy, 18.
This incident serves as a reminder of the FIT’s continued efforts to reduce gun crime in the city. The fact that the same people or related parties commit the same crimes repeatedly emphasizes the FIT’s commitment to not only discourage but also to catch those who violate gun regulations. The arrests and seizures are a component of a larger plan to improve community safety and lower the quantity of illegally possessed guns in public areas.
