San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus Faces Resignation Calls Amid Alleged Use of Homophobic Slurs and Misconduct

As proof of Sheriff Christina Corpus’s inappropriate behavior and use of homophobic slurs emerged, County Supervisor Ray Mueller pushed for Corpus’s resignation, adding to the chaos in the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. The County of San Mateo supported this, citing Corpus’s actions and improper conduct in ordering an undersheriff to act on behalf of a former employee with relation to gun safety regulations.

In an effort to be more accountable, the Board of Supervisors unanimously decided to move forward with a County Charter modification that may enable voters to swiftly remove a sheriff under specific circumstances. Following reports that the sheriff’s office was still losing employees, this decision was taken. According to news releases from the San Mateo County government, Supervisor Mueller emphasized the office’s instability by pointing out that “nearly all of the executive and command staff were hired or promoted by Corpus,” which runs counter to her assertions that she is fighting an established “old boys network.”

According to Hoodline, a symbolic no-confidence vote from the Board of Supervisors further strengthened the vote against Sheriff Corpus. Corpus has refused to step down in the face of demand, calling the board’s actions “wrongheaded and anti-democratic” and reaffirming her dedication to her post and the public safety efforts undertaken in her department.

In addition to the vote, the Board of Supervisors is prohibiting Victor Aenlle from county facilities and conducting a legal investigation of Corpus’s hiring decisions. These choices are made at a time when the sheriff’s office is seeing a high rate of attrition among its higher-ranking employees. Noelia Corzo, the county supervisor, emphasized the necessity for reliable leadership, pointing out in particular the disheartening effect on the Latino neighborhoods that had backed Corpus. Corzo told the audience, “We need a sheriff we can trust,” according to the County of San Mateo.
