St. Louis Park City Council Designates November 20 as Transgender Day of Remembrance

The St. Louis Park City Council has declared November 20 to be Transgender Day of Remembrance, a celebration and sobering reminder of the violence experienced by the transgender community. This declaration was confirmed by a social media post from the City of St. Louis Park, which highlighted the day designated to commemorate and remember members of the transgender and gender-expansive community who have died as a result of transphobic violence.

The day is a somber reminder that at least 27 transgender and gender-expansive people were slain in the US in 2024. The fight for awareness and justice for the community is made more difficult by the fact that three-quarters of these known victims were misgendered in the first police or media reporting. Transgender women of color continue to be disproportionately harmed, accounting for almost four out of five known violent homicides, as the Human Rights Campaign has pointed out this year.

The City Council’s proclamation outlines the day’s goals, acknowledging “the higher levels of violence, harassment, and discrimination transgender and gender-expansive communities face, especially those who are transgender women and Black, Indigenous, and people of color.” Additionally, it honors the advocacy and tenacity of transgender people in a variety of contexts.

With the creation of an LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group, St. Louis Park has taken more measures toward inclusivity with the goal of making the workplace safer and more welcome for LGBTQ+ employees and allies.

The city’s official observance of Transgender Day of Remembrance supports the dedication to promoting a society that values and safeguards all of its members, regardless of gender identity, and is in line with national and international initiatives to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by transgender people.
