Knoxville Police Release Bodycam Footage of Shooting Involving Axe-Wielding Man, Suspect Charged and Officers on Leave

Body camera footage from an officer-involved shooting event that happened on November 12 has been made public by the Knoxville Police Department. According to WBIR, the footage captures the moment that authorities met 52-year-old Christopher Arons in the 2600 block of Fairview Street as he was brandishing an axe. Arons was shot during the heated altercation and was later transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he is expected to recover from his wounds.

Arons is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of vandalism, according to a report submitted by WVLT. As is customary in any shooting involving an officer, the Tennessee Bureau of inquiry is in charge of the inquiry. While the department’s Office of Professional Standards conducts an internal investigation, Officers Smith and Burns have been placed on administrative leave.

Smith told Arons to lower the firearm multiple times before firing it, according to the bodycam footage. The footage shows Arons exclaiming, “I can’t,” just before he was shot. Video footage of the event shows officers giving Arons medical attention after he ceased to pose a threat. According to WATE, Officer Burns can be seen getting a first-aid kit out of the squad car to treat Arons’s wound.
