NYC Airports Experience Surge in Travelers and Weather-Induced Delays As Thanksgiving Week Commences

Thanksgiving vacations are beginning early for travelers arriving at LaGuardia Airport, with many choosing to take an entire week off work to spend time with their loved ones. Crowds are assembling ahead of Tuesday, which the Federal Aviation Administration says will be the busiest day for air travel, according to ABC7 New York. Airport activity has already increased yesterday, even if the volume of passengers has increased by 2% from the previous year.

“Work has been long, it’s been very stressful, and I wanted to make sure that I prioritize spending quality time with my family, so that’s why I took the entire week off,” Briana Brown told ABC 7 New York. Julia Femia, meanwhile, expressed what many travelers felt when she said, “I think getting home is important and just like get through the day and then you’re home and its fine.” But not everyone who travels is doing so for fun; for people like Fredrick Robinson, who must travel for job, the inconveniences of vacation travel are more difficult to bear.

According to NBC New York, conditions deteriorated on Friday when severe weather disrupted several New York City metro airports, including Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia, resulting in about 200 flight delays. There were 90 delays and 5 cancellations at JFK International, 67 delays and 8 cancellations at Newark Liberty, and 41 delays at LaGuardia. These weather-related disruptions struck New York City the biggest blows among the country’s major metropolises.

Newark Airport advised tourists to factor in additional time for arrival, parking, check-in, and security, as the final weekend before Thanksgiving is predicted to be very congested. In a statement and a post on X, the airport cautioned travelers to make advance plans because of a lack of air traffic controllers and the possibility of delays. Officials stressed the need for additional time for both the airport and the drive there, including parking, which is anticipated to be constrained because of the high volume of holiday traffic.
