New Orleans Police Release Body Cam Footage of Uptown Burglary Suspect Shooting, Officer Unharmed

A New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) officer and a burglary suspect were shot together in the Uptown neighborhood on October 10, 2024. The body camera footage of the interaction, which was made public by NOPD, offers a fresh look at what transpired before 63-year-old Dwayne Brown was shot. The new video, according to NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, demonstrated how things got out of hand when Brown, who had been wanted in several home invasions and burglaries, refused to be taken into custody.

Officers were called to a residential burglary report on State Street early in the morning, according to NOPD News. When they arrived, they found firearms taken from a property, and when they went to confront Brown, who ran, an exhaustive search was conducted. He was eventually discovered beneath a house on Perrier Street after a failed first attempt at capture with a Taser Energy Weapon, during which the suspect escaped again. When Brown and Officer James Godwin met on Prytania Street, a physical altercation broke out, during which the suspect brandished a handgun and opened fire on the officer.

In a WWL-TV interview recapping the standoff, Superintendent Kirkpatrick said, “God’s gracious hand, put a shield around this officer because they were literally just feet away.” Not being hit by the bullets, the officer returned fire, hitting Brown in the stomach. The NOPD affirmed that the officer’s actions were appropriate, and he has subsequently returned to full duty.

Brown was taken into custody following the altercation, and according to WDSU, he is facing a number of charges, including ten counts of burglary of an inhabited house, one count of attempted first-degree murder, and other associated crimes. In an effort to restore clarity and preserve public confidence in these extremely delicate situations, the NOPD has been open and honest in their release of the video, claiming that this action falls under their critical incident review policy.
