South Memphis Church Engulfed in Flames, Causes Power Outage for 2,000 MLGW Customers

The Memphis Fire Department responded to a fire that broke out at an abandoned South Memphis church yesterday evening, briefly cutting out power to nearly 2,000 people. Around 8:30 p.m., firefighters were called to the scene of the incident at the intersection of East Trigg and Hemlock Street. According to WREG, the Memphis Fire Department declared that “crews are going defensive,” and the public was urged to stay away from the area. At the time, there were no reported injuries. A calculated retreat was made to maintain safety and stop the fire from spreading after the church, which had stood for an unknown number of years, was destroyed by the flames.

Officials said that over 2,000 Memphis Light, Gas, and Water (MLGW) customers were without power as a result of the incident; reportage by Local Memphis shows that most customers had their power restored by approximately 8:45 p.m.

With the origin of the fire still unknown, the church’s remnants and the aftermath of the fire continue to cause residents and authorities to worry and wonder. According to FOX13 Memphis, the community continues to observe the inquiry, clinging to the memory of a church that was more than just walls and a steeple but a part of their common past.
