The office of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said that a man from Union City was found guilty of several felonies, including embezzlement from a family trust and criminal enterprise. According to the Attorney General’s office, David White, 67, was convicted of running a criminal organization and embezzling money from the John Stirling White Trust, which included the Winery Office Building in downtown Farmington.
White became a co-trustee of the trust after his father, John Stirling White, passed away in 2014. However, even though the trust had multiple adult children who were beneficiaries, the assets were never disbursed because of the ongoing legal battles, and White maintained control over the income and financial records until he was removed by the probate court in 2019. The Department of Attorney General’s subsequent investigation revealed that White had embezzled a minimum of $400,000 from 2014 to 2019. His conviction consists of six counts of failure to file taxes, which carries a 5-year felony sentence, two counts of embezzlement by an agent or trustee of $50,000 to $100,000, which carries a 15-year felony sentence, one count of conducting a criminal enterprise, which carries a 20-year felony sentence, and one count of embezzlement by an agent or trustee of $1,000 to $20,000, which carries a 5-year felony sentence.
According to the press release, Attorney General Nessel stated that “those entrusted with their care must manage the hard-earned savings and property of those who have passed with integrity and respect, not exploit them.” She reiterated her department’s commitment to prosecute those who abuse such trust and thanked the jury for their efforts. According to the Attorney General’s office, Judge Martha Anderson of the 6th Circuit Court in Oakland County has set White’s sentence date for January 23, 2025.
