A Chicago man is charged with several offenses related to his alleged involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol. The 27-year-old Patrick Gorski is charged with multiple offenses, including disorderly behavior and unlawful access into Capitol restricted areas, as well as felony obstruction of law enforcement during civil unrest. Gorski was arrested by the FBI on Thursday, and the charges were later disclosed by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Gorski was part of the crowd that went to the “Stop the Steal” demonstration in Washington, D.C., on the day of the Capitol riot, and then moved toward the Capitol building. His actions included helping other rioters, scaling a wall, and entering the first scaffolding. According to the U.S. Department of Justice release, the records state Gorski was aggressively interacting with police officers, vocally and on camera, and yelling, “This is our house!” as the crowd attempted to push their way farther into the Capitol.
The joint session of the U.S. Congress intended to tally the electoral votes from the 2020 presidential election was interrupted by the events at the Capitol. Since then, more than 1,561 people have been charged with offenses connected to the Capitol breach, including more than 590 people who are alleged to have assaulted or obstructed police officers. Gorski’s case has just been added to the DOJ’s extensive inquiry, which runs across nearly all 50 states.
Following his arrest, Gorski first appeared in the Northern District of Illinois. Using evidence such as recordings and pictures of Gorski at the site, the prosecution have put together a timeline of his involvement from rally to riot. According to the allegations, Gorski continued to try several times to enter the Capitol after being restrained with O.C. spray and once obstructed police attempts to secure an entrance. He did not instantly have a defense against these charges.
