San Antonio Unveils Barbara “Robbie” Robinette Community & Senior Center

The city’s newest community asset, the Barbara Robbie Robinette Community & Senior Center, which aims to strengthen ties between generations, has San Antonians buzzing with enthusiasm. The cutting of the ribbon marked the opening of a brand-new facility designed to provide programming for a younger audience while still acting as a wellness and educational sanctuary for those over 60. A city press statement states that the facility will be open six days a week, with elder activities taking place Monday through Friday with possibilities for people of all ages growing into Saturdays.

This large 17,000-square-foot facility, which was funded as part of the 2017–2022 Bond Project and has a $14.2 million budget, will directly improve the lives of San Antonio’s senior citizens. The facility will be run by the Department of Human Services, which will also offer programs created especially to support an active and involved lifestyle. According to the city’s news agency, Mayor Ron Nirenberg stated that “The Robinette Center will provide an opportunity for the development of powerful partnerships between our youth and older adult communities.” He saw the center as a “gateway” to the city’s intergenerational connectivity.

However, the center is not limited to senior citizens. It offers a wide range of programs run by the Parks & Recreation Department, from year-round youth sports leagues to health and ecological initiatives. “A neighborhood hub for older adults and youth to make friends, pursue hobbies, and maintain their overall wellbeing,” said Councilmember Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia, according to the city’s news site.

According to the city’s news release, “The City of San Antonio is proud of and committed to providing opportunities that empower youth and older adults to lead healthy and active lives,” said City Manager Erik Walsh, who expressed his pride in the effort. The remarkable class lineup includes everything from dance and technology to exercise, all carefully chosen to meet the rapidly changing interests and abilities of all age groups. In addition to these services, the center intends to provide seniors who live within five miles of the center with free transportation alternatives, making it simple for those who are unable to drive to go to the facility.

Facilities like an eating area, a gym, and many classrooms are at the center of this brand-new facility. In order to ensure that the mental and physical well-being of San Antonio’s senior population is given careful consideration, the DHS Senior Services Division offers a variety of leisure activities, such as movie screenings and lottery games, wellness education, and health tests.
