Dense Fog Descends on East Tennessee, SW Virginia, and SW North Carolina, NWS Warns of Hazardous Driving Conditions

The National Weather Service Morristown, Tennessee, reported that a veil of heavy fog this morning disturbed the start of the week for residents in East Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and southwest North Carolina. With freezing fog adding to the risk of dangerous driving conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses, the National Weather Service said that visibility may have decreased to less than a quarter mile.

Drivers were urged to slow down and keep a safe following distance due to the impaired vision around nearby lakes and rivers caused by rising fog as thick as wool. NWS Knoxville’s weather report described a chilly, foggy morning with highs of about 61 degrees later in the day and temperatures just above freezing at 34 degrees.

Given this week’s weather, the entire region has braced itself for what is next. With a “multi-day heavy rainfall event” predicted for Thanksgiving Day and Friday, the National Weather Service warns of an unwanted visitor at Thanksgiving parties. In certain areas, the total rainfall might be as much as 2 inches, and “isolated pockets of over 3 inches could occur across the higher terrain.”

According to the weather service, the “main concern will be the flooding potential” after the moisture-heavy incursion, as cooler air braces the terrain behind the rain. According to the National Weather Service, the people are preparing for the change from warm to cold temperatures as Thanksgiving weekend draws near. The notification suggests a tempered festive attitude.

However, daily life continues as cars become accustomed to fog advisories and the National Weather Service has not yet activated its spotter network. Even as fried turkeys and family get-togethers temporarily divert attention from the cold, damp blanket that is supposed to envelop the region at a time of gratitude and giving, the weather patterns serve as a constant reminder of how erratic nature can be.
