Dartmouth College Sorority Charged After Incident Leading to Student’s Drowning in Hanover

Following a terrible event this summer in which a student drowned, a Dartmouth College sorority and two of its fraternity members are being charged. According to CBS News, the student, identified as Won Jang, 20, of Middletown, Delaware, vanished in July following an off-campus party hosted by the Alpha Phi sorority. Jang’s body was later found in the Connecticut River by state and local emergency personnel.

Alpha Phi was accused with one count of aiding an underage alcohol home by Hanover, New Hampshire police last Friday. Two members of the fraternity Beta Alpha Omega, which Jang belonged to, are also charged with giving alcohol to underage individuals. The majority of partygoers were under 21, and after the event, some of them decided to swim in the river, according to WCVB. However, the crowd scattered when an unexpected downpour struck, leaving Jang behind—who, according to family members, was incapable of swimming.

Following the incident, Dartmouth College suspended both the Alpha Phi sorority and the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity, and the suspensions remain in effect. In a statement, the college emphasized the value of community and accountability among its Greek groups. “Dartmouth has long valued the contributions that Greek organizations bring to the student experience, when they are operating within their stated values and standards,” the university added. “These organizations, as well as all Dartmouth students and community members, have a responsibility to ensure Dartmouth remains a safe, respectful, equitable, and inclusive community for students, faculty, and staff,” as perWCVB.

There have been no successful attempts to contact Alpha Phi representatives for comment. The function of Greek life on campus and the safeguards in place to protect students during social gatherings have come under scrutiny as a result of this occurrence.
