The Marion Barry Jr. Legacy Murals, a visual homage to the late mayor kept at the Marion S. His term and programs that supported Black-owned businesses, created summer youth employment, assisted elders, and promoted women’s leadership are specifically highlighted in the second panel. Cora Masters Barry, the previous First Lady of Washington, DC, said, “My husband truly loved Washington, DC, and its people. Some of his most significant contributions to the city are depicted in the mural, along with some of the individuals that collaborated with him to help develop the city and give its citizens more authority.
A number of programs and tributes have been established in the 10 years since Mayor Barry’s death to honor his memory in the city, including the dedication of Marion Barry Avenue and the renaming of the Summer Youth Employment Program. Furthermore, his legacy still has an impact on D.C.’s urban growth and civic values today. Reggie Van Lee, Chairperson of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, said, “After a rigorous and extensive process, I think we have selected the best team to capture the essence of Mayor Marion Barry’s historic accomplishments and contributions through art, technology, and display objects accessible to all ages.”
The Department of General Services is in charge of the murals, and director Delano Hunter has emphasized the significance of making sure Barry’s influence is carried on by future generations. Nabeeh Bilal, the mural’s artist, has echoed this feeling by describing the piece as a gesture of appreciation for the mayor’s ongoing efforts. Bilal acknowledged the former mayor’s crucial role in forming the city’s landscape: “Marion Barry is a larger-than-life figure, and we are honored to pay tribute to his legacy through this project,” the Executive Office of the Mayor said in a news release.
