Yesterday, residents of Orion Township came together for a vigil, praying and showing solidarity alongside the burned-out remnants of what was once a home for many until a condo explosion shook the neighborhood. Danielle Redilla, 32, described the terrifying event to ClickOnDetroit, adding, “I just felt hot air in my face and then I looked in my corner kind of where my wall is shared with my neighbor and it was totally in flames.” She was among the lucky ones, escape the explosion unscathed and receiving aid from the community right after.
It is thought that a gas leak caused the explosion that happened at Keatington New Town Condominiums on Tuesday. Hoodline also raised this issue, pointing out that numerous people were displaced and that two elderly people were seriously hurt. Chris Barnett, the Township Supervisor, emphasized the destruction, pointing out that windows had been blasted out and a unit had been knocked off its foundation. He said the damage appeared “like something in a movie.”
The prayer vigil was led by Pastor Josh Yates of The River Church in Lake Orion. Yates stressed the importance of continued community assistance in an interview with WXYZ, given that the disaster’s effects would last for weeks and months to come. The attitude of communal strength was mirrored by Autum Marshall, another complex resident: “When something like this happens, the community just comes together and just supports each other and that’s what we really need when a tragic thing like this happens.”
Since then, DTE and Consumers Energy have collaborated with emergency personnel to manage the fallout. Consumers Energy spokeswoman Hoodline offered the following statement: “As first responders are still actively battling the fire, we do not have additional information about the cause of the explosion or about the status of anyone in the building.” Although the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and these businesses are currently looking into the source of the explosion, preliminary evidence still points to a gas leak.
