Grand Rapids Township Fire Lieutenant Hospitalized After Assault by Armed Man at Fire Station

In a disturbing event over the weekend, a Grand Rapids Township fire lieutenant was attacked by an armed person and is currently in the hospital.WOOD-TV says that a 40-year-old man from Cedar Springs who had previously used illegal substances and had a revolver in his hands attacked the firefighter just before 4 p.m. yesterday. The incident took place at the fire station, which is situated close to Knapp Street NE at 1836 E. Beltline Ave. NE.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) said that the lieutenant first allowed the man into the station’s garage, assuming he was there to work on the concrete, according to FOX 17. As it became clear that the person was not only suicidal but also violent, the situation quickly got out of hand. “It was discovered that the man was suicidal, had used illegal drugs, and had a firearm,” the KCSO said in a press release.

The lieutenant requested emergency assistance due to the sudden turn of events, and when deputies arrived, they discovered the man “actively assaulting the lieutenant,” as FOX 17 described. The attacker was apprehended and restrained by first responders who were able to step in. The fire lieutenant is currently undergoing medical treatment for a number of injuries he sustained in the event.

The suspect is still being held at the Kent County Correctional Facility; his name has not been made public. The matter is anticipated to be reviewed by the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office.
