In the midst of Oakland’s political turmoil, City Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas announced on social media that he had won the Alameda County District 5 supervisor race. This comes as incumbent Mayor Sheng Thao’s historic recall triggers a change in the city’s leadership. Alameda County Registrar of Voters election data shows that Bas is only 415 votes ahead of Emeryville Councilmember John Bauters. Although Bauters hasn’t publicly acknowledged his surrender, Bas revealed that Bauters had hinted to it in a private phone conversation. Bas wrote, “Please join me in thanking John for his years of public service and a hard-fought campaign,” in a tweet that NBC Bay Area picked up.
In the midst of this political reorganization, Bas’s possible rise to the position of county supervisor would then proceed to swiftly choose Oakland’s acting mayor, a role she was assumed to assume after Thao’s recall. However, Oakland views its Council President Pro Tem, Dan Kalb, as the prospective interim leader, as supervisory responsibilities are on the horizon pending final vote confirmation. According to KTVU, a special election must be held within 120 days to choose a permanent mayor, and an update on the final vote count is expected on December 3. Certification is also due by December 5.
Congresswoman Barbara Lee’s name appears in the list of possible contenders for the mayoral special election, sparking speculation. Her intentions have not yet been confirmed by Representative Lee, whose political position prominently opposed the recalls of Thao and Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price. “At first, I opposed the recall. At this point, we must examine ourselves and comprehend the dynamics around elected officials. Explaining the intricacies of Oakland’s democratic process, Lee said on KTVU, “What democracy really means, and people have a right to vote for whomever they want to vote or ballot initiative or recall or not, but again the people have spoken.”
Bas reiterates her intention to be a “Supervisor for all of us,” concentrating her work on affordable housing, homelessness, healthcare, job development, and safety, as she expresses her thanks to Bauters and considers her possible new position on her social media platform X.
Please join me in expressing gratitude to John Bauters for his tireless campaign and years of public service. Our beloved East Bay is confronted with complicated, ever-changing, and difficult demands and concerns. It will require all of our combined effort, and I shall serve as our supervisor.0Py80yEawO pic.twitter.com/
