Long Beach Breaks Ground on New Affordable Housing Project for Low-Income Seniors

According to a press release from the City of Long Beach, construction has begun on a new affordable housing project in the Alamitos Beach neighborhood of Long Beach. The project will serve low-income seniors and seniors who have experienced homelessness. An 82-unit complex with one-bedroom residences for eligible persons over 55 will be part of the 300 Alamitos development.

Alongside city officials and Mercy Housing California and Wells Fargo partners, Mayor Rex Richardson hailed the project’s launch at the groundbreaking event on November 21. “300 Alamitos will be a safe, dignified place seniors can call home,” he said. According to the City of Long Beach, this new building demonstrates the City’s steadfast dedication to expanding the supply of affordable housing options and improving livability throughout Long Beach. Previously a parking lot, the 300 Alamitos site is near Downtown East Village and has easy access to public transportation and other community amenities. Construction is anticipated to be finished in late summer 2026.

Vice Mayor and Second District Councilwoman Cindy Allen discussed the city’s investment in the well-being of its elderly population and reaffirmed her dedication to the city’s senior citizens. As stated by the City of Long Beach, “Our top priority is making sure our community has access to more affordable housing options,” she said, promoting the new building as a way to promote inclusivity and compassion for the elderly in Long Beach.

With the help of $5 million in state funding, Mercy Housing’s subsidiary, The California Land Acquisition Fund Holding I, LLC, paid $4.9 million for 300 Alamitos. This development has been hailed as a major step toward Mercy Housing California’s goal of providing supportive and affordable housing, a goal that co-developer CTY Housing shares. According to the city’s statement, Yasmin Tong, principal and founder of CTY, stated, “The City of Long Beach truly stands out as a true partner on affordable housing development and we look forward to bringing more high-quality housing to this locality.”
