Over 16,000 Minnesota Residents Enroll in Tuition-Free College as North Star Promise Scholarship Gains Traction

More than 16,000 students have already enrolled in public universities this fall as part of the North Star Promise Scholarship, a program to offer tuition-free college to Minnesota residents. Given the campaign’s success, there is a lot of hope that participation will rise in the upcoming years as awareness keeps rising.

Although BBAY’s campaign is coming to an end, the fight to increase access to college and careers is still ongoing, and the organization has thanked the members of the Free College Campaign Coalition and the Task Force for their cooperation. In order to tell Brooklyn’s varied population about the scholarship, BBAY has partnered with The Linden Group to release seven videos in English, Spanish, and Hmong. Supporters are urged to share or repost these movies to help spread the news about the educational financial aid that is available. They are currently live on the Free College Campaign website and BBAY’s social media accounts.

With the opening of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2025–2026 academic year, the call to action is still ongoing. It is recommended that prospective students get ready by setting up an account on StudentAid.gov, obtaining the required paperwork, and figuring out their dependent status. Known for providing assistance to kids filling out their MN Dream Act or FAFSA forms, College Possible is available to set up one-on-one consultations.

Finally, as reported last month, Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) provided insight into the lives of seven North Star Promise scholars, three of whom had ties to Brooklyn Park or Brooklyn Center. Students’ first-hand stories of how the scholarship has opened doors to their college and professional pathways were included in the piece.”Thank you for sharing your stories and how this opportunity has opened doors for you to college & career pathways!” was how one interviewee expressed gratitude, highlighting the significant influence the scholarship program has on people’s lives.
