12-year-old accidentally shot in the arm in Detroit, police say; 16-year-old charged

(CBS DETROIT)According to the police, a 16-year-old kid was taken into custody Monday night in Detroit after unintentionally shooting his 12-year-old cousin.

Before ten o’clock at night, police were called to a shooting in the 18800 block of St. Aubin Street. To receive treatment, the 12-year-old was brought to the hospital.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday that it is accusing the 16-year-old with negligently firing a firearm that caused harm. He was given a $500 bond after showing up for a preliminary hearing.

The date of the pretrial hearing is set for January 15, 2025.

Two adults and two additional children were present at the residence when the incident occurred, according to Capt. Derrick Griffin of the 11th precinct. Although a search of the premises revealed the pistol in the backyard, Griffin claimed the shooting had place inside the house.

It’s unclear how the 16-year-old obtained the firearm and whether it was locked up before to the incident. According to the police, the shooting was not deliberate.

“This is just another instance in which a child was shot in Detroit. And I would like to say to all gun owners: Please keep your weapons safe. Griffin told reporters, “We love and care for the kids, so make sure your gun is secure so these kinds of incidents don’t happen again.”

The kid must not use illegal drugs or have any firearms, according to the prosecution.
