Detroit People Mover resumes service ahead of Thanksgiving

One of the greatest ways to get about the city, it runs continuously until Thanksgiving evening at 7 p.m. (CBS DETROIT).

The Detroit People Mover is now operational and prepared to greet visitors, particularly during America’s Thanksgiving Parade, following months of closure for track maintenance.

Darnell Albert, 25, a father of two, said, “It’s very nostalgic for me because I am used to coming here as a kid, and now that I have my own family, it’s a very good bonding thing we have.”

It’s an inexpensive, quick, and joyous way to strengthen family ties, and that’s just what the Alberts were doing on Wednesday.

Albert remarked, “Just so they know where they come from,” “They can see how beautiful the city is and being more comfortable with being here and experiencing the city of Detroit.”

The Alberts, who are native Detroiters, enjoy exploring the city’s attractions and taking the People Mover.

It’s a rite of passage, according to Darnell Albert.

His words, “For me, it’s family,” “If you just want to see the sights of Detroit or see the riverwalk, it’s a very good place to see the great sights of Detroit.”

Since rides became free, ridership has surged by more than 100%, according to Robert Cramer, general manager of the Detroit Transportation Corp.

“Something that is always interesting to me is you will have people visiting from out of town or out of the country who have never been to Detroit before or never been on the People Mover, and a lot of times you hear from them they are surprised with how nice and the views are so great, so its always great to hear that, but really we have a lot of positivity, not just about the system but all the great things happening in the city,” Cramer said.

For Thanksgiving and the holiday season, the People Mover will be a reliable way to take advantage of everything downtown has to offer.

The station in Grand Circus Park is preparing for America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade by distributing free hand warmers and chocolate on Thursday from 7 to 10 a.m.
