Detroit police officer wounds 2 bystanders while responding to June block party shooting, interim chief says

(CBS DETROIT)An officer who attended to a block party in June has been placed on “no-gun status” after an inquiry found she injured two bystanders, Interim Police Chief Todd Bettison revealed on Wednesday.

Officers were called to the 16500 block of Trinity on June 1 after many 911 reports indicated that there had been several gunshots in the neighborhood. According to Bettison, two women, ages 20 and 23, were unintentional targets of the female officer’s five bullets when she came into contact with two attackers. The cop also shot one of the attackers. The investigation into the individual is still ongoing.

According to the acting chief, none of the three were seriously hurt.

In all of DPD’s officer-involved shooting instances, Bettison said a warrant request will be sent to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. After the department received an examination of ballistic evidence, the officer, who has been with DPD for approximately eight years, was placed on administrative duty.

“The scenario was chaotic, and it would be an understatement to suggest that the officers’ approach was risky. It was a noisy scene. On Wednesday, Bettison told reporters, “People were screaming, some were in pure distress.”

On June 1, just before 1:50 a.m., police received 911 calls reporting a shooting near Trinity and Florence streets.

According to Bettison, patrol officers heard the gunshots and were alerted to the 911 calls while they were stopping traffic a few streets away. At the scene, police found 93 bullet casings and eight guns.

According to Bettison, two armed attackers were carrying an AR-style rifle and a handgun. The cop shot the suspect while he was in possession of a firearm. He claims that less than a minute was spent on the site by the officers.
