(CBS DETROIT) Giving Tuesday is a chance for you to donate to a worthy cause and change the world.

Nearly 4,000 charitable organizations in the Metro Detroit region, including those fighting food insecurity like Birmingham-based food bank The Dre Project, are in need of your assistance.

Jennifer Jackson, the founder of the Dre Project, runs the nonprofit organization out of her garage. This year, she will deliver to 600 families, affecting over 1,500 children.

“We’re not going to ask any questions, so we’ll just kind of help you through that little interim, and then hopefully people come back, and they help, and they deliver, and they do other things within our community,” Jackson stated.

The Dre Project provides a home-cooked meal, 60 pounds of dry supplies, and a birthday box to any family experiencing financial difficulties once.

This encompasses individuals such as Tamilla Thomas and her three kids.

“She made me up a food box, and she brought it to me, as well as a few baby items that she had, like new boxes of diapers, wipes,” said Thomas.

For the mother who gave birth to her daughter three weeks ago, it was a huge help.

“I was in dire need of several of those things, but it was incredibly helpful. Thomas remarked, “I’m in love with Mrs. JJ.”

Additionally, Jackson and The Dre Project have prepared her for the holidays.

“I’m in love with a Christmas tree that I have. It’s taller than me, and it’s just so massive. Thomas added, “I’ve never had a Christmas tree this tall.”

The amount of food assistance going to pantries nationwide keeps rising.

“I feel like the need just keeps growing and growing with the price of groceries that are going up with so many families facing hardship,” Jackson stated.

This is particularly true around the holidays.

“Having kids these days is really costly; you have to pay for diapers, infant formula, food, snacks, and even school clothes. “It just adds up quickly,” stated Janette Phillips, Share Detroit’s executive director.

However, even a little $10 donation might have a significant effect.

“Imagine if every person in Metro Detroit, six million people, each gave $10; that would be $60 million that can support a nonprofit,” Phillips stated.

Every small donation, not only on Giving Tuesday but all year long, helps families in need.
