Michigan football fires offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell

ANN ARBOR, MI (CBS DETROIT) — Following a 7-5 season, Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore announced Tuesday that the program had fired offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell.

Moore said a nationwide search for a new offensive coordinator will begin, with tight ends coach Steve Casula acting as the interim coordinator.

According to his U of M staff bio, Campbell served as an offensive analyst in 2022 and a quarterbacks coach in 2023 under previous coach Jim Harbaugh. He assisted the Wolverines in winning the National Championship and going unbeaten in 2023. When Moore became head coach in 2024, he was elevated to offensive coordinator.

“After a thorough assessment of our offense, I made the decision to relieve Kirk Campbell of his duties and move in a different direction,” Moore said in a press release. “I believed that this was the wisest course of action for our football program. I would like to express my gratitude to Kirk for his commitment to Michigan Football, the university, and our student-athletes. I hope he succeeds in his future coaching pursuits.

The leadership change follows the Wolverines’ 13–10 upset victory over Ohio State on Saturday to end the 2024 season. After Michigan tried to plant its team flag at middle in Ohio Stadium, the teams got into a brawl after the game. Both teams received $100,000 fines from the Big Ten Conference, which claimed that their behavior was against the conference’s sportsmanship code.

“Not only did the actions of both teams violate fundamental elements of sportsmanship such as respect and civility, the nature of the incident also jeopardized the safety of participants and bystanders,” the Big Ten stated in a statement.

The Wolverines, who flipped Belleville quarterback Bryce Underwood from LSU, are looking to bolster their offensive line. Since January 2024, the top recruit in the class of 2025 had pledged his allegiance to the LSU Tigers.
