(CBS DETROIT)Road crews are working to treat roads in anticipation of anticipated ice conditions as Metro Detroit prepares for another round of winter weather.
This occurs less than a week after Michigan State Police recorded more than 200 collisions during the Thanksgiving holiday in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. When snow showers hit Southeast Michigan on Friday, MSP issued a warning to drivers about hazardous roads.
Officials are making sure they’re ready because additional snow is predicted to fall in the region this week.
According to Craig Bryson of the Oakland County Road Commission, “the tricky thing about that event was we had a forecast of light snow but we had whiteout conditions.”
According to Bryson, his agency applied liquid brine to the roads both before and during the event. But there’s only so much they can do, he said.
It like turning a massive ship. When you have to spin the large ship to get it to go where we need to go, it’s a very slow and laborious process, Bryson explained. “You make the plans, you point it in the right direction,” he said.
Drivers must remain alert even though the same teams will be pre-treating the roadways in Oakland County for the upcoming round.
“When it’s snowing so hard that you literally can not see ahead of you, there is not much we can do,” Bryson stated. “We can’t remove the snow from the road so fast. Additionally, we cannot be in so many locations at once.”
