(CBS DETROIT) The Detroit Lions have announced Jared Goff as their 2024 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award nominee.
The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award honors “players who excel on the field and demonstrate a steadfast commitment to creating a positive impact beyond the game,” according to a team announcement. It is given out every year. Established in 1970, the award was renamed in 1999 in honor of Walter Payton, the renowned running back for the Chicago Bears.
In 2022, Goff was the Lions’ nominee as well.
“This nomination is a reminder of how humbled I am. “My desire and obligation to give back to my communities are closely linked to my work off the field,” Goff said in a statement. “I take it seriously to be an inspiration to others with my level of influence. My platform, our partners, and I are still dedicated to embodying the admirable ideals this honor and recognition stand for.”
Since 2022, Goff has worked with children to create designs for his JG16 apparel brand and has joined with Detroit’s Give Merit FATE program. Sales of clothing generate scholarships for student designers, and Goff matches 100% of every transaction.
The quarterback has also teamed with the Lineage Foundation for Good to combat food inequality and minimize waste, and he has partnered with the Detroit Lions Academy and Detroit Lions Foundation to sponsor the construction of a STEAM lab and learning center at the Detroit public school in 2022.
In the week preceding Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans, all 32 award nominees will get recognition for their accomplishments. Each nominee will get a donation of up to $55,000, and the winner, who will be revealed on February 6, will receive $265,000 to the charity of his choosing.
In a statement, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated, “The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award honors Walter’s lasting legacy of excellence on the field and compassion off it.” “This award is the league’s most prestigious honor, and we are proud to recognize these 32 outstanding men for the positive impact they make in their communities every day.”
With a victory over the Green Bay Packers (9-3) on Thursday night, Goff and the NFC North-leading Lions (11-1) want to secure a second straight postseason bid. The game starts at 8:15 p.m.
