Detroit, Michigan (CBS)The University of Michigan announced on Thursday that it had extended the contract of athletic director Warde Manuel for an additional five years.
A news statement states that Manuel’s term ends on June 20, 2030. He oversees 29 teams and over 900 student-athletes as the university’s 12th athletic director.
“I want to express my gratitude to President Ono, Board Chair Kathy White, and the members of the Board of Regents who have been very supportive of me and our athletic department,” Manuel stated in a press release. “I’m excited to build on the achievements we’ve achieved together as collegiate athletics undergoes change. I am grateful to represent Michigan Athletics and work at this outstanding organization every day. I would especially like to express my gratitude to the coaches, staff, and student-athletes who represent each of our teams and have contributed to our unmatched academic and athletic achievement. I can’t wait to keep giving back to a university that has helped me so much throughout my career.
Under Manuel’s direction, U of M has won 52 Big Ten titles since 2020, including the 2023 National Championship for Michigan football.
According to his staff bio, Warde was appointed athletic director in 2016 after previously served as athletic director at the University of Connecticut.
He graduated from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and a master’s degree in business administration. He was a member of the track and field team and played football for former coach Bo Schembechler.
