(CBS DETROIT)According to Michigan State Police, a wrong-way motorist killed a DDOT bus early Saturday morning when he collided with it head-on on the Lodge Freeway.
Around 4:40 a.m. on Saturday, a 58-year-old man’s Ram pickup was heading north in the southbound lanes of the Lodge Freeway close to Log Cabin Street when it crashed.
The Ram collided head-on with the DDOT bus and instantly took fire, according to the police. The man could not be rescued by troopers.
At the scene, the driver was declared deceased. His family is currently being notified by the police.
The bus driver had non-life-threatening injuries and was sent to a nearby hospital.
According to the police, the bus was empty when it crashed. The Jeep Compass was the third vehicle hit by the wrong-way driver. According to police, the Jeep’s driver had non-life-threatening injuries and was sent to a nearby hospital.
In a statement, MSP Lt. Mike Shaw stated, “At this time it hasn’t been determined where the wrong-way driver entered the freeway and why they were going the wrong way.”
