University of Michigan regent Jordan Acker’s home vandalized, car spray-painted

(CBS DETROIT) Jordan Acker, a Regent at the University of Michigan, reported that pro-Palestinian graffiti was spray-painted on his car and vandalized his house overnight Monday.

Acker, who is Jewish, posted pictures of his wife’s car sitting in their driveway with the words “Divest” and “Free Palestine” spray-painted on it, as well as the damaged front window of his Oakland County home on Instagram on Monday. According to Acker, his family has been the victim of attacks three times.

“This is the third time that I and now my family have been the target of these Klan-like tactics,” Acker wrote in the essay. “This cowardly act that is attacking my family and my home needs to be called out for what it is: terrorism.” And I will not allow fear to prevail, as we often do in this wonderful country when we face terrorism. This only makes me more determined to keep acting morally for the University and the Michigan voters who elected me. I urge the people of Michigan to openly denounce this heinous act of anti-Semitic intimidation and to fully assist law enforcement in removing these bigots so they will face the repercussions of their behavior.”

Following the events at Acker’s residence, the university released the following statement:

Early this morning, Regent Jordan Acker’s house was vandalized, which is obviously an act of intimidation against Jews. These crimes are categorically condemned by the University of Michigan. They are disgusting and, regrettably, the most recent in a string of instances in which people have been harassed due to their work for the university. We will not put up with this; it is unacceptable. We urge our community to unite in solidarity and to adamantly oppose all forms of violence and discrimination.”

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators brought requests to Acker’s and colleague regent Sarah Hubbard’s houses in May.

“The attack on Regent Acker’s home is an affront to all that we stand for as a university and to our deepest values as a community,” Michigan President Santa Ono wrote in a Xon Monday post. In all imaginable terms, we denounce this heinous conduct.

Acker’s Goodman Acker law office in Southfield was vandalized in June. That event was being looked into by police as a hate crime.
