CBS DamageThe Biden-Harris Administration just released a study that lists 18 of the most economically important bridges undergoing repair or reconstruction.
This includes Monroe County’s River Raisin Bridge. In 1955, the I-75 River Raisin Bridge was initially finished. Over time, the bridge has deteriorated due to wear and tear, but the Biden Administration is set to transform it.
“Bridges are just one of the 66,000 projects and counting that are getting support through the infrastructure package just in Michigan alone, $13.4 billion going out of over 1000 projects making life easier and more convenient for people across the state,” U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said during his Monday visit to Monroe.
Over 61,000 vehicles use the I-75 River Raisin Bridge each day, making it an essential connection between Detroit and Toledo.
According to Greg Brunner, MDOT’s Chief Operations Officer, “this stretch of I-75 has about 25% commercial traffic, which means it’s significant in terms of commerce, not just for Detroit, but internationally, with the rest of the country.”
The Michigan economy may suffer significantly if the bridge is not rebuilt.
“If the bridge was not replaced and closed, it would lead to a loss of approximately $58 million in gross regional product and $129 million in loss of Michigan business and output sales,” stated Robert Clark, the mayor of Monroe.
The state received more than $196 million in federal funds to assist in the bridge’s replacement.
As part of this project, six strategic bridges in this region will be fixed. In order to increase safety, there will also be changes made to the interchange, Brunner added.
The capital of our country is about to undergo changes. According to Secretary Buttigieg, this announcement represents the Biden administration’s endorsement of the initiative.
“I can’t speak for any administration but the one that I serve in, but what I can say is that this is a deserving project and ought to be seen through all the way to when they cut the ribbon,” said Buttigieg.
Now that the grant has been approved, MDOT may begin the project’s planning stage. It is anticipated that the project will begin in 2028.
