According to the Salvation Army, a contributor encouraged others who had coins to donate by giving away their final Krugerrand coin. In response to the request, one donor placed their coin in a kettle at the Hobby Lobby, 42643 Ford Road, on December 7. A news release states that three additional golf coins, estimated to be valued $1,721, were thrown in a kettle in Farmington Hills.
“These generous donations will help The Salvation Army in its efforts to raise $7 million for its Red Kettle Christmas Campaign which funds critical human services all year round,” the organization stated in a release.
A gold coin valued at an estimated $2,000 was put in a kettle in St. Clair Shores in 2023 by an unidentified contributor.
