Harsens Island left without running water after water main break

(CBS DETROIT) Residents of Harsens Island are without running water due to a water main break in Clay Township.

Authorities think the North Channel, which serves Harsens Island, is where the break happened.

Divers ‘ efforts to find the break have been hampered by windy circumstances. The location of the break is being assisted by an underwater drone. Response teams will decide how to proceed with repairs after identifying the break’s location.

Drinking water is available to locals at the Harsens Island Fire Station on La Croix Road. Each home has access to a 2.5-gallon box of water.

Three portable restrooms are available for anyone to use from the Harsens Island St. Clair Flats Association. To flush the toilets, residents are urged to carry a five-gallon pail of river water.

Clay Township has declared a state of emergency in order to receive state aid due to the water main break.

There is currently no expected timeframe for the restoration of service as of Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
