3.3 Magnitude Earthquake Recorded in Southern Ohio, Felt in West Virginia and Surrounding Areas

According to the United States Geological Survey, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.3 occurred on Monday morning in the far southern region of Ohio, directly along the Ohio River, less than two miles to the northwest of Chesapeake, Ohio.

A community in Lawrence County with a population of approximately 730 people, Chesapeake is situated on the other side of the Ohio River from Huntington, West Virginia, and approximately 131 miles away from Columbus.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake took place at 9:39 a.m. at a depth of more than 14 miles below the surface.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), residents in the vicinity most likely felt weak to light shaking, although there was no damage.

In addition to being felt in Chesapeake, the earthquake was also felt in Brentwood, Proctorville, and Rome to the east, and it was felt all the way to Ironton in Ohio to the west, as indicated by the United States Geological Survey Community Internet Intensity Map.

Furthermore, the map reveals that the tremor was felt in Ashland, Barboursville, and Milton, in addition to Huntington, which is located in West Virginia and is the location of Marshall University.
