During the evening hours of Sunday, a vehicle struck and killed two pedestrians who were crossing Illinois 15 in Cahokia Heights, which is located northwest of Interstate 255.
Sgt. Chris McGinnis stated that the police have positively recognized a male pedestrian who passed away at the age of 55, and they believe they have identified the other pedestrian as a female pedestrian who was 51 years old; however, they are still trying to confirm this identification.
The names of the individuals will not be made public until the members of their families have been informed.
It appears that the vehicle came to a stop, and the driver exited the vehicle and walked away, according to McGinnis, who made the statement on Monday.
Police in Cahokia Heights are conducting an investigation.
A silver BMW traveling in a northwesterly direction toward East St. Louis struck the pedestrians as they were crossing Illinois 15, commonly known as Missouri Avenue, just southeast of Pocket Road at approximately 7:20 p.m., according to McGinnis. He stated that the incident occurred. The woman and the male were not on a crosswalk or at an intersection when they were seen.
The BMW is registered in the state of Missouri; but, according to McGinnis, the police believe that the owner sold it not too long ago. An official theft report had not been filed for the vehicle.
“I don’t think the driver would have been charged with a crime if they had stopped,” McGinnis said. “I don’t think they would have received a charge.” There was a lot of darkness outside, and the pedestrians were crossing the street in the center of the road. However, after you depart, it becomes a criminal offense.
McGinnis mentioned that in the state of Illinois, it is considered a Class 1 crime to flee the scene of an accident that has resulted in a fatality.
According to McGinnis, the male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident. A female patient was taken to a hospital, but she did not survive her stay there.
In an attempt to obtain a statement on Monday, the St. Clair County County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. could not be reached.
