A semi-truck bumped into a picketing Amazon worker during a demonstration at a Detroit warehouse on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred on December 19th outside the Amazon warehouse located on 8 Mile Road near Woodward Avenue, where Teamsters union members were protesting.
According to Kevin Moore, President of Teamsters Michigan, the situation unfolded while the demonstrators were walking across the driveway. “(We were) slowly walking across the driveway.
This non-union driver came up the driveway faster than you’re supposed to. You’re supposed to enter a driveway at a slow pace,” Moore explained to WWJ News. “We were walking in a row, and my guy Roy was behind me.
The truck came up and, instead of stopping, bumped into him. He didn’t fall, thank God, but you don’t enter an egress like that.”
The worker, identified as Roy, was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation but did not suffer serious injuries. Details about the truck driver involved in the incident have not been disclosed.
While fewer than 12 people participated in the Detroit protest, Teamsters members across the country are joining similar demonstrations.
Moore shared that workers in several locations, including Shelby Township, Livonia, Romulus, Grand Rapids, and Detroit, are actively striking. “We’ve got nine of them on strike right now this morning,” Moore said.
The protests are part of a broader push by the Teamsters union against Amazon, citing the company’s treatment of workers and lack of meaningful negotiations.
Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien released a statement addressing the situation. “If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed. We gave Amazon a clear deadline to come to the table and do right by our members. They ignored it,” O’Brien stated.
“These greedy executives had every chance to show decency and respect for the people who make their obscene profits possible. Instead, they’ve pushed workers to the limit and now they’re paying the price. This strike is on them.”
The incident highlights the escalating tensions between Amazon and its workforce, particularly during the busy holiday season when workers face increased demands.
The protests serve as a call for the company to address concerns related to workplace safety, wages, and respect for unionized employees.
