Snow Alert: Metro Detroit Faces 1-3 Inches, Travel Could Be Slippery Tonight

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) — Weather experts are keeping a watchful eye on the radar as Southeast Michigan braces for snowfall that could make roads slippery from Thursday night into early Friday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts light snow starting Thursday afternoon, especially in areas north of I-69, where it could begin earlier.

The snow will spread across Metro Detroit overnight and continue into Friday. By Friday evening, up to three inches of snow might accumulate, with some areas, particularly in the Thumb region, possibly seeing higher amounts.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg mentioned that most of the snow in Detroit would likely arrive after dark on Thursday.

“There might be a few flurries during the day, but nothing significant,” Lundberg told WWJ’s Jackie Paige. “The main snow activity will start tonight.”

The snow is expected to impact travel conditions, especially during Friday morning’s rush hour. Lundberg explained that the snow system would move from Chicagoland into Southeast Michigan overnight.

“It’ll come in bursts—sometimes steady, sometimes light, almost stopping—and then pick up again. This pattern will continue through the Friday morning commute,” he said.

The snowfall should ease by Friday afternoon, but Metro Detroit might still experience lingering snow showers later in the day.

Temperature-wise, it’s going to be chilly. Highs are expected to stay in the low 30s on Thursday and Friday, with Thursday night’s low at 30 degrees and Friday’s at around 20 degrees.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the weather will be cold but dry. Saturday will have some sunshine with a high of 26 degrees, while Sunday will be sunnier with a high near 29. Nighttime lows will dip to 15 degrees on Saturday and 21 degrees on Sunday.
